How is Intuition Different Than Psychic?

How is Intuition Different than Psychic?

Intuition is often described as a gut-feeling or just knowing what an outcome was going to be without any reasoning being involved.  Psychic is described as relating to or denoting phenomena that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws, especially involving telepathy or clairvoyance. There doesn’t seem to be very much difference in these two words, yet there are in the understanding of how they are used in the Spiritual Biz.  Basically, if you use your talents intuitively, you are doing it through feeling.  If you are going about it psychically, it is more than likely that you are using one of the C’s, Clairvoyance, Clairaudio, etc.

I also see people use intuitive as a lighter word when discussing the paranormal with a less than receptive audience.  Psychic brings about heavier images and connotations than describing someone as intuitive.  I like to describe the difference between the two when I compare how I use them in doing readings.  If I am doing a cold reading, where I have never met the person I’m reading for and they have not asked a specific question they need answered, then I will be using my psychic gifts to receive any messages and insight for them.  If I have never met the person I’m reading for, yet they ask me a specific question or have a topic they want to discuss, then I can use my intuitive gifts to find their answers.  Intuition helps me find the outcome.  Psychic shows me much more general and far reaching information.

The Biggest Difference

I think the biggest difference between the two is that the general public, even non-believers of the paranormal, accept intuition as a rational and possible.  They may readily denounce psychic as hokum or fraudulent, but quote that their wife has “woman’s intuition.”  Hardened police officers may laugh at the thought of a haunting, but declare that they are excellent detectives and crime solvers because they listen to their gut-feelings.

The word psychic comes from a Greek word meaning “breath” and “soul.”  The word intuitive comes from a Latin word meaning “accurate” or “unerring.”   These really sum up the meanings for me, with every breath and in my soul, I am psychic, and I am blessed with accurate and unerring intuitive insight!

  3. Thanks for explaining the differences between intuitive and psychic Josephine. I often use intuition in my therapy work with others yet use psychic abilities when I read angel cards.
